AMD’s Sixth-Gen Processors: More Cores, Multimedia

In June of this year AMD redefined the notebook processor when it announced its high performance Accelerated Processing Unit (APU) in a system-on-chip design.  This design delivers up to two times the battery life and gaming performance of competing platforms.

AMD’s Heterogeneous System Architecture (HSA) allows the cores to share workloads and system memory. In traditional setups the CPU acts as the traffic cop for separate CPU and GPU workloads.  This new design lets the CPU and GPU cores act equally in sync to complete compute tasks, in contrast to the traditional setups the FX-Series APUs bring a total of 12 compute cores (four CPU and four GPU) into play.

As a result graphics performance is improved in the 6th generation APUs, with AMD R6 Graphics for the A8 and A10 processors, and AMD R7 Graphics for the FX-Series. Pairing with AMD Radeon R6 or R7 discrete graphics (via a discrete graphics card or notebook GPU), the APUs work in conjunction with the discrete GPU which, according to AMD, gives gamers even better quality through an extra boost in graphics performance.
